It has been a stormy week for Ontario’s Premier Doug Ford. After the backlash that he received from students because of the changes he made to the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP), and following the accusations of nepotism, Ford is now being criticized by Toronto residents because he decided to cancel the Canada Day celebration At Queen’s Park in Toronto.
Laryssa Waler, Ford’s Executive Director of Communications, said, “For the first time ever, our government is helping hard-working families celebrate Canada Day by offering free admission to the first 500 visitors at 10 different Ontario agencies and attractions. Instead of hosting a single event at Queen’s Park, we are providing free admission for thousands of people to Canada Day events across the province.”
Celebrating Canada Day at Queen’s Park in Toronto has been a tradition for more than 50 years. The celebration usually costs $300,000, and the entrance was free for everyone. The Ford government said that the new celebration will cost approximately $80,000, while the entrance was free for the first 500 visitors in each region.
Many Canadians are still upset about the cancellation, primarily because it is a tradition.
