Morsi’s Death

Egyptian former predent Mohamed Morsi, 67, has suddenly died following a court appearance in Cairo, according to Egyptian State television.

The former president, who was also the Muslim Brotherhood leader, was having his trial session in an espionage lawsuit on Monday, June 17th, for an alleged contact with Hamas when he fainted.

Morsi was serving sentences on convictions of killing Egyptian protesters, espionage involving Qatar and contact with Hamas, and other convictions. He was sentenced to death in 2015, but the sentence was overturned the following year.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his condolences. He tweeted: “With great sadness and sorrow, I received the news of the death of my brother Mohamed Morsi, the first democratically elected president in Egypt. I call upon the mercy of Mohammed Morsi, one of the most democratic activists in history. We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return.”
