Quebec’s Controversial Bill-21

Mina Amer

The government of Quebec passed a new bill that, according to the bill’s supporters, is a movement towards “secularism.” To put it simply, the bill will ban the expression of all religious symbols in public sectors. There was a heated debate, especially between the Quebec Liberal Party, who was against it, and Parti Québécois, who was for it. The bill ended up being passed, and now it is illegal for employees in public sectors, such as teachers, to wear any religious symbol like Crucifixes, Hijabs, Turbans, or Kippas.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau criticized Bill-21, saying, “we do not feel it is a government’s responsibility or in a government’s interest to legislate on what people should be wearing.”
