The government of Iraq, headed by President Barham Saleh, announced on Thursday that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has agreed to transfer its regional office to Iraq. UNESCO has accepted the invitation of the Iraqi president to move its regional office to Baghdad instead of Amman. The organization allegedly announced that approval after a phone conversation between the president of Iraq and the Director General of the Organization, Audrey Azoulay, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture.
Saleh added: “This step, taken by UNESCO, will strengthen the partnership between Iraq and the Organization and will reinforce the support of education, culture, science, and heritage in the country, noting that this response will be reflected positively on the role of the Organization and its work in Iraq, especially the development of education curriculum along with the technical and vocational training to enhance the capabilities of workers in various vital sectors. “
UNESCO’s office in Iraq was established in 2003 but was transferred to Amman in 2004 because of the continuous threats.
